Course Description
This course raises officer's and
supervisor's awareness, understanding and recognition of the phenomenon commonly referred
to as "Suicide by Cop". It describes what constitutes a "Suicide by
Cop" incident and addresses the belief that these incidents are often no win
situations for responding officers.The course assesses the ability of call intake
personnel, dispatchers and first responders to recognize a potential "Suicide by
Cop" incident. It teaches frequently observed behaviors, common myths and realities
associated with suicidal conduct. It discusses methods for identifying and dealing with
these events, with an emphasis on officer safety.The course identifies tactical
considerations and discusses alternatives for handling potential "Suicide by
Cop" incidents. It uses videotapes to show "Suicide by Cop" reenactments
and discusses current events. Finally, the course examines the psychological impact on the
involved officers and their related agencies following a "Suicide by Cop"
incidenthis

Instructor
Chic Daniel retired as a Detective from
the Los Angeles Police Department in 1998 after 25 years of service. Chic spent twelve
years assigned to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit. During this time, he was
involved in the service of hundreds of high risk search warrants and the creation of
tactics used in the service of these warrants. Chic was also a member of the Crisis
Negotiations Team (CNT) dealing with barricaded suspects, hostage situations and the
growing number of suicide related calls. He was assigned for nine years as a narcotic
detection canine handler at the Los Angeles International Airport and was involved with
the training of numerous narcotic canines. Daniel has taught and continues to teach
classes dealing with Search Warrant Preparation and Service, Crisis Negotiations, Suicide
by Cop, Airport Interdiction and Courtroom Testimony relating to Narcotic Detection
Canines.
