Course Description

Enhanced Search Behavior

This technique was developed in Norway and has been introduced to trainers in the US. It takes the hunt drive that is already in the canine and enhances it. You will see a noticeable difference in you canines ability to search and locate the target odors. It also will greatly reduce “false response” by the handler skills that will be introduced while running your dog.

Goals: At the end of this seminar, handlers will have a better understanding of a dogs hunt behavior and rewarding the hunt thus increasing the dogs searching behavior and reduce false alerts.

  • Understand the five phases of The Hunt vs. dog drives being taught throughout the US.

  • Understand how to manipulate a dogs drives within The Hunt.

  • Understand the difference between focused alert and focused searching.

  • Understand and know how to reward the hunting behavior vs. an obedience behavior.

  • Demonstrate an understanding in how to prepare, set up and store aids.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of scent reduction and the myths surrounding it.

  • Define and understand thresholds.

  • Demonstrate how to set up search areas.

  •  Understand training set numbers and durations.

  • Understand why a dog will give a false indication and how to correct that problem.

E-Collar Class

Class Goals: At the end of this seminar, the handler should understand the basic    principles required to use a remote e-collar in police dog training and deployments.

  • Have a good understanding on using an e-collar for training police dogs in obedience, bite work, and guard and bark.

  • Identify the different e-collars that are available on the market.

  • Understand how e-collar mistakes can be corrected. ( the collar is not a fix all tool.  The  animal must understand the behavior  before the collar is used)

  • Know the difference between the old style collars (shock) and the new collars (remote training).

  • Learn to teach the dog what causes the collar to turn on and off. How to manipulate the dogs drives to get the behavior you are looking for.

  • Practical demonstration w/ problem solving.

Directional Training

Instructional Goal: To enable a handler to control his K9 using directions in a search area and increase officer safety while not interfering with the dogs ability to search.

Dynamics of Odor

Ever wonder how odor really works, how much odor is on a cotton ball, does odor rise, fall, climate impact. All of this and more will be addressed.

Practical Training Bomb Dogs

The seminar will include class room training in the mornings on Monday thru Wednesday with practical exercises in the evenings, all day Thursday. Friday will consist of certifications and running of large amounts of target odors.

Important: Class size is limited to 30 drug dog teams and 10 bomb dog teams. Once this is filled you will be placed on a waiting list.
